Living sustainably and maintaining your quality of life is something we should all strive to do. With rapid climate change and habitat loss occurring worldwide, sustainability is at the forefront of global concern. Concern isn’t enough though; it must turn into action. A gargantuan effort is needed to leave a healthy planet for our children and grandchildren. Therefore, we’ve written a guide on 5 easy changes that can be done with (almost) no effort. If we all make a little change today, we can have a better tomorrow!
Check out our tips:
Utilize your old clothes! When we account for all of our innerwear, outerwear, and accessories, we all have a lot of clothing that, unfortunately, doesn’t last forever. Things get permanently stained, ripped, outgrown, or may just not suit your taste anymore. Despite this, you can always give your clothing a second life!
For permanently stained or ripped items, you can recolor these items with bleach or completely repurpose them as rags, pillowcases, curtains, etc! Turn Jeans into shorts or long sleeve shirts into short sleeve shirts or tank tops! If you truly have no use for something at all, make sure to donate it. Someone else can utilize it instead of buying new clothing/fabric.
Stay away from disposables! Disposable products may seem convenient but they’re a nightmare for our planet and unnecessary. Use reusable bags when you go shopping. Buy reusable bottles for water, coffee, etc. Invest in metal utensils, plates, and Tupperware that can be washed. Avoid Straws.
Curb your waste of paper products and styrofoam. Paper is something we use every single day, so being a little wiser about our consumption will make a huge difference. First of all, try to avoid using paper if its not necessary. Don’t write something out, whether it be directions or notes if it can be typed. Typing info is better because it’s more accessible and convenient to send/share. If you’ve just used a new piece of paper, try to then use it as loose leaf paper. There’s no need to get a brand new sheet to paper to write down an address or do a quick calculation.
Finally, watch what paper you’re using indirectly. Try to prevent junk mail or advertisements that you don’t use from being sent to you. Also, refrain from taking handouts/flyers you don’t need. A lot of printed works can be found online so this is totally unnecessary. For example, switch from getting a physical newspaper delivered and read the daily publication online! Another form of paper is cardboard. It can be hard to avoid because so many products (snacks, toys, appliances, etc.) are wrapped in it. As soon as something is taken out of the box, it most likely won’t ever be put back in it. Therefore, always make sure that cardboard is recycled and reused.
