As global warming continues, the extraordinary will continue to become normal and what’s normal now will become rare. One of the most pressing issues of our time is global warming. Global warming, caused by greenhouse gases, is beginning to rapidly accelerate sea-level rise and the effects are already clearly being seen. A recent Forbes article highlights how Greenland lost over four million pounds of ice……IN ONE DAY!!!
The melting of Greenland’s ice sheet is nothing new. During the summer, temperatures get warmer globally. It’s not uncommon for heatwaves in the United States to make their way over to Greenland and cause ice melting. This is a common occurrence from June through August. The problem we face today is that global warming has lengthened and intensified Greenland’s ice melting season.
Recently, Greenland has seen substantial ice melt occurring earlier and earlier into June and even may! Last year, a major cause of this was a US heatwave that swept across the Atlantic and made it to the west coast of the island. In addition to the immediate effect of ice loss, the phenomena are aggravated as time goes on. Ice melt leads to subsequently greater absorption of heat. This leads to even more ice melting and the cycle continues.
Why does this matter globally? The health of Greenland’s ice sheet is of great importance to everyone worldwide due to sea-level rise. As Greenland experiences increasing ice melt, sea-level rise places huge stress on coastal areas. Coastal properties, which tend to be expensive, are continually damaged and huge amounts of money are spent on repairs and the future prevention of coastal erosion. In the future, continuing sea-level rise may potentially displace millions of people leading to climate refugees all over the world. What we do today will heavily influence our future so we all need to act now! Join Physis today to support the fight against climate change!
