A Movement is Born
April 22, 1970 marked the first formal Earth Day as a way to bring awareness to growing public concern over environmental degradation and the increasing emission of fossil fuels by countries across the developed world. The 1960s and 1970s in the United States were characterized by the emergence of social protests advocating against a breadth of issues from anti-war to anti-pollution. Since its inception, Earth Day has spread to become a global holiday and is celebrated in over 190 countries.
